SESSION: Can I Really Teach Critical Thinking?

Sometimes we don't realize how close we are to providing our students with the right keys to get them thinking in the classroom. Many times it can seem like students aren't able to come up with good responses to our critical thinking exercises or that they don't want to participate. As teachers, we may not realize how close we are to helping our students to reach the goals that we have set. A few changes to activities and assessments can often be the key to opening the door to greater levels of thinking. This workshop will focus on some examples in multiple subjects for modifications that were made to assignments and assessments in order to properly teach students how to develop their thinking skills.

SESSION: Heritage Language and English Learners

In this presentation, learn why proficiency varies among our heritage language learners. As a Spanish teacher, and having taught a number of Spanish speaking students over the years, I began to wonder why heritage language learners had varying proficiencies in my Spanish classes. Even though most of these students had similar experiences growing up (only speaking Spanish at home and taking ELL classes), once these students reached the high school level, some were completely fluent. Still, others could only understand spoken Spanish, but could not respond, and some heritage language learners were somewhere in the middle. This led me to research why proficiency varies among our heritage language learners. Come learn why the use of a native or heritage language among our students is essential and a must for both our classrooms and community.

Students spend time researching the topic and then decide how they would like to share the information to the class. Genius Hour is an enjoyable learning experience during which students can explore things they are curious about and present the information in a fun and creative way of their choice. Come learn what our students did and what they presented!

SESSION: New Peeps at Jouett - A Hatching Project

It's time for some egg-citement! Are you ready to fluff your teaching feathers as you hear about the barn-raising fun we had working with the second graders at Jouett and helping them to "spread their wings" as they successfully hatched baby chicks? You might think this is just about holding fluffy chicks, but the plot chickens - there is more! What how our students take flight as they used the 5c's to collaborate as a team and daily track the incubator statistics, communicate updates with the entire school, and critically think about all the needs of baby chicks. Creativity was used and collaboration developed through our "chick mobile" that traveled far and wide through the halls of Jouett, delivering nuggets of chicken facts, and letting other classes experience the chicks first hand. No foul play here. It was an egg-cellent adventure!
